Scott Baxter, Owner & Licensed Funeral Director

Scott is a lifelong resident of Battle Creek, graduate of Lakeview High School and Valedictorian at Worsham Mortuary College in Chicago, IL. He has been married to his wife Melissa for over 26 years and they have three children: Aria, Braden and Cosner. He serves on the Board of Education for Pennfield Schools, CASBMA Board for Calhoun County and is a member of Victory Life Church. Scott has served the Battle Creek area in funeral service for over 26 years and the founder of the Baxter Funeral & Cremation service.

Melissa Baxter

Melissa is a lifelong resident of Battle Creek, graduate of Pennfield Schools and Western Michigan University where she received her teaching degree. Her and her husband of over 26 year, Scott, have three Children: Aria, Braden and Cosner. She is the music teacher at Purdy Elementary School in the Pennfield School District and is a member of Victory Life Church.

Samantha Mayer, Licensed Funeral Director

Samantha was raised in Casco, Mi. When she was 14 years old, her father passed away of a rare disease, allowing her to discover her calling as a mortician. Shortly after, Sammi moved to Kalamazoo, where she graduated from Gull Lake High School in 2008. She went on to fulfill some beginning classes at Western Michigan University before graduating from Kellogg Community College in 2012 with a degree in sciences and general studies. Sammi then attended Wayne State University where she graduated with a Bachelors degree in Mortuary Science in 2014. Sammi has been working in the industry since November 2013 and has been with Baxter Funeral & Cremation Service since September of 2014.

Hailee McCann, Director

Hailee was from Howe, IN, but recently moved to Battle Creek. She knew from an early age that mortuary science was what she wanted to pursue while in college. Hailee graduated from Glen Oaks Community College in 2014 with an Associate in General Studies. She then furthered her schooling and graduated from Mid America College of Funeral Services with an Associate in Mortuary Sciences.  Hailee started working at Baxter Funeral and Cremation Service in October 2016.  

Jane Mulder , Bookkeeper/Office Manager

Jane, along with her husband and two sons relocated to the Vicksburg area 22 years ago from Grand Rapids.  Those 22 years have passed much too quickly with the hectic schedule of raising a family, the satisfying yet stressful years of entrepreneurship, a new career for Jane and the addition of a daughter!   Jane was employed at a greenhouse in Kalamazoo for 21 years,  originally hired as a part-time bookkeeper but as the business grew Jane moved into full time as the shipping manager.  Jane’s love of gardening flourished with the addition of many new flower beds! Unfortunately, the business closed unexpectedly which prompted her to look for and accept the Bookkeeper/Office Manager position at Baxter’s.  So, along with recently becoming empty nesters (Go Green!),  Jane is enjoying her co-workers and her part in assisting the families here at Baxter Funeral and Cremation Service.

Tracy Johnson, Receptionist

Tracy has been with Baxter Funeral & Cremation since April, 2013. After serving eleven years, honorably with the United States Army, she and her son returned to Battle Creek, Michigan. She graduated from Kellogg Community College in 2009 with an associates degree in business management & accounting. Tracy is a huge supporter of her son in the United States Marine Corps. Tracy is an active board member at Dexter lake Church of God. Tracy enjoys helping people of the community and spending time with her family and friends.

Debbie Caswell, Receptionist

Debbie was born in Battle Creek and has lived here most of her life.  After an extended time of living in Bronson, Michigan, she returned to Battle Creek with her son.  Debbie has two children and 3 grandchildren.  She graduated from St. Philip High School and Davenport University, where she received her paralegal degree.  Debbie enjoys spending time with her family and friends.  She has worked for many years in the educational, medical, and legal fields.  Debbie has been with Baxter Funeral and Cremation Service since July 2015.

Randy Lang

Randy Lang is a lifelong resident of the Battle Creek area. He retired from Kellogg Company after 29 years of service. Randy has worked collectively in the funeral industry for 8 years and is currently employed at Baxter Funeral & Cremation.

Fred Cummins

Fred and his wife of forty years have three grown children and two grandchildren.  They are lifelong area residents .  Active member at Victory Life Church. Fred and his wife serve on the Altar team also leads in small groups. Fred retired from the Crime Lab of the Battle Creek Police Department.

Stan Root

Stan is a lifelong resident of Battle Creek. After graduating from Battle Creek Central, he served 6 years in the Michigan Air National Guard.  Stan is retired from Consumers Energy after 42 years of service.  Stan and his wife of 45 years, Carolyn are members of First Assembly of God.  They are also proud parents of 3 grown children and 7 beautiful grandchildren. Stan has been employed at Baxter Funeral and Cremation Service since 2011.  

Duane Bartsch

Lifelong area resident. Graduated from Harper Creek, High School. Served in the U.S. Navy during Vietnam war. Retired from Cello-foil then was on staff at First Assembly of God Church. Has been with Baxter Funeral and Cremation Service for over a year.  Duane married his wonderful wife Evelyn 38 years ago and have 6 adult children. He loves spending time with his grandchildren and enjoying the retirement life. Duane has been with Baxter Funeral and Cremation Service since April 2015.

Roger and Barbara Steele

Roger was born and raised in Battle Creek; graduating from Battle Creek Central High School in 1966. Barbara grew up in Grand Rapids, MI; graduating from Ottawa Hills High School in 1967.  They both graduated from the Grand Rapids School of the Bible and Music, where they met and were married in 1971. Together they worked in children’s ministry and directing camps for 20 years. In 1991 Roger took the pastorate of Atlanta Bible Church in Atlanta, MI where he and Barb served for 24 ½ years. After moving to Atlanta, Barb worked at the local newspaper for about 15 years. In 2010 she accepted the position of mentoring coordinator with MSU Extension; matching at-risk youth with caring adults. Roger and Barb retired in December 2015 and moved back to Battle Creek; purchasing Roger’s boyhood home. Roger and Barb have three grown daughters; all serving in Christian ministry. They have six grandchildren. Roger enjoys umpiring and playing golf. In her spare time Barb enjoys sewing. Roger and Barb have been employed by Baxter Funeral and Cremation Services since April of 2016.

Dan Freehling

Dan grew up in Three Oaks, Michigan.  After high school graduation he joined the U.S. Air Force where he served for four years  and was honorably discharged in 1970.  He was then hired by the Battle Creek Police Department where he worked for the next 23 years retiring as a Lieutenant.  After retirement he entered into a second career working for the State of Michigan - 18 months as a Child Protective Service Caseworker and 11 years as a Parole Agent.
He and his wife of 44 years, Colleen, have 2 married daughters, 4 grandchildren and are members of Calvary Baptist Church.  He has been with Baxter Funeral and Cremation Services since June of 2015.

Katherine Phillips

Katherine has been a lifelong resident in the Battle Creek area, and is a graduate of Lakeview High School.  She has 2 adult married children and five grandchildren.  She and her husband, Duane, have been married for 11 years.  She loves time spent with her family, quiet times at home, amateur photography, Karaoke and crafting for her recently created small business adventure, dKpWorks LLC.   Employment prior to Baxter Funeral and Cremation Services included 14 years at Archway Cookies National Headquarters and 10 years at EPI Printers Corporate Office.
