Obituary for Johnnie Ruth Reed-Stults

Johnnie Ruth Reed-Stults
Johnnie Reed Stults passed away December 29, 2016 In Bronson at Home Hospice Residence at the age of 84. Johnnie was born July 15, 1932 in Gadsden, Alabama. Daughter of Ann L. Amos, and stepdaughter of Joseph C Carpenter, Johnnie was raised by her maternal grandparents, Walter and Exie Amos. She graduated from Emma Sansom High School in Alabama City, Alabama in 1952. After high school, Johnnie joined the U.S. Navy at the Great Lakes Training Center in Illinois. She served her country for three years as a Wave. There, she met Richard D. Reed who she would marry in 1954. After leaving the Great Lakes Training Center, Johnnie and Richard moved to Battle Creek, Michigan. Together they had three children; daughter Denise A. Reed Karis, of Battle Creek, Michigan, daughter Terry L. Reed of Sanford, Florida, and son Richard W. Reed, of Battle Creek, Michigan. In 1985 Johnnie and Richard's marriage ended in a divorce. Johnnie would go on to work for the Battle Creek Federal Center for eight years. From there, she would work at the Kellogg Company for twenty nine years, retiring in 1992. In 1995 Johnnie married Roger L. Stults. Roger had two daughters from a previous marriage; twins Debbie Latshaw, and Lynn Maiolo of Battle Creek, Michigan. Johnnie was preceded in death by her parents, first husband Richard D. Reed, son Richard W. Reed, daughter Terry L. Reed, and step daughter Debbie Latshaw. Johnnie is survived by her husband Roger L. Stults, daughter Denise A. Karis, sister Candace J. (Johnny) Tipler of Gadsden, Alabama, her grandchildren Brandon N. Karis of Los Alamos, New Mexico and Courtney A. Karis of Kalamazoo, Michigan, nephew John D. Tipler of Jacksonville, Alabama, niece Jennifer L. Tipler of Gadsden, Alabama, stepdaughter Lynn G. Maiolo, step grandchildren Brian (Beth) Latshaw of Kalamazoo, Michigan and Rachel (Thomas) Phillips of Battle Creek, Michigan, step great grandchildren David D. Latshaw of Kalamazoo, Michigan and Megan M. Phillips of Battle Creek, Michigan. Johnnie leaves behind numerous loving relatives in Gadsden, Alabama. She also leaves behind Gwen O. Killian Riter of Battle Creek, Michigan whom she always lovingly referred to as “her special third daughter”. She also leaves a long time friend, Georgia Beard whose friendship and support goes back to when they were young ladies working together at the Kellogg Company. Johnnie attended the 20th Street Church of Christ and she enjoyed traveling, gardening, and spending times with friends and family. Visits with my mom always started and ended with a kiss, a hug, and an “I love you”. Johnnie was a devoted mother and there was always a deep love between her and her children. She also shared a special place in her heart for her grand children and thought the world of them. Beyond being a loving mother and grandmother, she was a devoted wife and was dedicated to her husband Roger whom, in return, was completely dedicated to Johnnie. My mom was a compassionate, caring person who will be missed dearly by all who knew her. We appreciate all the love and care given her during her stay at the Bronson in Home Hospice Residence.

If desired, donations can be made in memory of Johnnie to the following institutions.
