Luciano Pellin
Luciano (Luchio) Pellin, 84, of Battle Creek, Michigan, died on Wednesday, February 8th, 2017, at Bronson at Home Hospice Residence in Battle Creek. He was born June 6, 1932 in Battle Creek, Michigan to Silvio and Palmira (Nicoletto) Pellin. Luchio retired from the Clark Equipment Company; he also worked at McDaniel’s Flooring, Michigan Carton, Jury Rowe’s Furniture, and the VA Medical Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 38 years, Hazel (Grandstaff); brother Walter and wife Bea of Battle Creek; sister Vera Richmond and husband Fred of Battle Creek; and sister Wanda, of Florida.
He is survived by daughter Dawn (Kenneth) Larsen of Battle Creek; son Tony Pellin of Battle Creek; grandchildren Amanda (Jason) Adams of Battle Creek, Joseph Larsen of Battle Creek, Alicia Hayward of Centreville, Chase Reed Pellin of Battle Creek; two great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and special friend Betty Badger of Battle Creek.
Luchio enjoyed sports and coaching, hunting, nature, and spending time with his family. When he was six years old, neighborhood children chipped-in to buy him a baseball mitt when his family was unable to fund the purchase. This lead to his lifelong love of sports. He was active in the Wattles Park Men’s Club and served as president. He was a baseball umpire in Battle Creek, serving as the home plate umpire for Stan Musial tournaments. He coached a variety of sports teams for 60 years, including baseball, softball, and basketball taking pride in earning regional championships. Luchio was known for his outstanding pitching ability and pitched until he was almost 40 years old; playing cards and board games, and his water skiing and swimming abilities. His family emigrated from Italy in the 1920s. He helped his parents learn English. His favorite joys were giving advice on a wide variety of topics and caring for his dogs.
According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made in his name to the Wattles Park Men’s Club, the Battle Creek Sportsman’s Club, or Bronson at Home Hospice Residence. Luchio’s family will be hosting a memorial during baseball season according to his last wishes.
