Obituary for Donald Benton Veeder

Donald Benton Veeder
Donald Benton Veeder, 70, of Battle Creek, Michigan, passed away on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at home with his loving family at his side. He was born on July 7, 1946, the son of Harold and Lillian Veeder.
Don met his best friend and love of his life, Linda (Hogberg) Veeder when they were in 8th grade. During their senior year, Don and Linda were elected by their classmates for Valentine King & Queen. They graduated from Cadillac Senior High School in 1964 and on June 25, 1966 they were married. He was the number one quarter back and captain his senior year; he also played baseball and ice hockey. In 1964 he also graduated from Flint barber college and began his business "Verona Barber Shop." Affectionately known as "the Mayor of Verona," he had a passion for his work and he cut hair for clients in hospitals, funeral homes, and houses. Don was a selfless man and he loved to give back to his community. During holidays he would purchase Christmas trees from St. Phil and give them to his less fortunate clients. He provided team dinners for local football teams and sponsored Verona Barber Shop baseball and youth sports around the city for many years. He was a member of the Presbyterian church in Cadillac, a member of the Masons, and president of Verona school mixer. Don played ice hockey for men's league in Battle Creek and was inducted into the amature baseball hall of fame.
Don is survived by his Wife of almost 52 years - Linda Marie (Hogberg) Veeder; Daughter, Heidi (Greg) Veeder-lenz; Son, Craig Veeder; grandkids, Hannah and Tyler Lenz; two sister-in-laws, Jan (Dave) Hogberg-Kennard, and Julie (Jim) Hogberg-Gross; Nieces and nephews, Erin, Holly, Nick, Mason, Jason, and Trapper (Kim) Hogberg; brother-in-law, Greg "Hoag" Hogberg; beloved dog, Shae Baby and a host of friends and other loving family. He was preceded in death by his parents and his loving in-laws, Alvin and Adaline Hogberg.
Don was a loving and selfless man who would give anyone the shirt of his back. He enjoyed fishing trips to Canada and deer camp with his family. He also enjoyed gardening and flower shopping with his wife. Being the sports guy that he was, he loved to spend days at Bailey Park watching baseball. Don did everything with intention and passion, including telling great stories at the barber shop. He was a loving husband, wonderful father, and unforgettable grandpa. His heart of gold will be cherished by all those he leaves behind.
